This is a great example of why not to repoint/ point old soft brickwork with a hard cement based mortar. The hard cement mortar used here has not allowed any moisture to escape or allow any movement occur. This has forced the face from the brick and has caused major brick spalling. The only way to correct this now is to remove the entire section of brickwork and replace with new bricks. This is a lot more costly than just doing the job properly in the first place but at least by correcting the rest of the house now by removing the cement mortar and repointing with a NHL (natural hydraulic lime) mortar will prevent any further spalling in the future.
